Think about your own life. What stands out to you? Which memories are the strongest for you. Sure, the contrarian in you will immediately latch on to some happy memory. But count the good versus the bad. We remember the bad in so much more detail than the good.
Let's be more mundane, shall we? Which dinner to you talk about more? The time your meal was good and the waiter was acceptible? Or the time your steak was crap and the waiter didn't even look at you?
There's a reason the evening news is dominated by the things that are painful. "13 dead in a random shooting." "5 car accident on the interstate today" "Home foreclosures are up this month."
I think I'd faint the day I hear "Little girl gives mother a daisy picked from the yard".
We love pain. We live pain. Live is pain and the sooner you realize that, the sooner you find a way to shield yourself and find a way to deal.
